“Islamists in Britain: Friends or Enemies?” with Robert Lambert MBEWednesday the 1st of April, Spanish Hall at the Winter Gardens, 8pm to 8.45pm
By 2011, Britain will be spending £3.5bn a year on counter-terrorism. In the bid to fight terrorism, some prominent Muslim leaders have come under attack for their values whilst some think-tanks argue that the current government strategy is, using their own terminology, “underwriting the very Islamist ideology which spawns an illiberal, intolerant and anti-western world view”.
The question posed examines those very “Islamists”, as the government strategy to counter terrorism develops. Who are these “Islamists” in any case – what are their values – what can we learn from the past in fighting terrorism – and are these “Islamists” our friends or enemies in the collective fight against terrorism?
Robert Lambert was involved in counter-terrorism operations for more than a quarter of a century, and prior to retiring from the Metropolitan Police in 2007 Robert was co-founder and head of the Special Branch Muslim Contact Unit (MCU). He is also a member of the EC Expert Panel on Radicalisation.
Today he is a lecturer at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St.Andrews and a Research Fellow at the University of Exeter.
